Running Round-Up {9/11/2012}

What were your distances/times this week?

Saturday – 2.13 miles
Monday – 6.21 miles

What motivated you to run this week?

I wanted to meet my longest run distance of 6 miles, and I did it!!

What did you think about while running this week? Did you have any random or profound thoughts?

It is really strange. I actually have been running without music lately because I have discovered my time is better with no music. So I had 1.5 hours yesterday to just think and run–but I can’t remember what I thought about. My mind wanders from one thing to the next that it’s not really thinking much about anything.

Did you reach any specific goals this week? Do you have goals for this coming week?

I did want to reach 6 miles, which was my longest distance. I reached the goal and even went 0.20 miles farther 😛 I hope to get 7 miles within this next week.

What did you listen to while you ran this week?

Nothing. While it felt like it took forever in the silence, the time did go quicker and I shaved off a lot of time

Where did you run? New route, old route? Did you see anything special?

I ran on the trail again, but I actually went in the opposite direction. I’ve never run that way before, and I’ve only once been that far (and that was on a bike). It was definitely nice to see something different, even if it sort of freaked me out a little because I was all alone and running further away from civilization (the trail starts in a city, goes 13 miles through farmland, and ends in another city).

Which app (if any) do you use to track your exercise?
Do you track your calories?

I use Map My Run to track my runs–I love the live tracking. But I do use a different calorie counter, My Fitness Pal.

Running Round-Up {8/28/2012}

What were your distances/times this week?

Wednesday – 2.91 miles
Tuesday – 3.85 miles

What motivated you to run this week?

Honestly, I ran today because I hadn’t run in about week and I was missing it and starting to feel guilty about making excuses.

What did you think about while running this week? Did you have any random or profound thoughts?

Today I was particularly wondering what I did to make the Fates mad at me! Man, everything seemed against me. My phone wouldn’t track my run (I use MapMyRun) nor would it play any music. Then the new capris I bought that I thought were a “comfortable” loose were practically falling off my butt the whole run! (It turned out okay, but I’m not used to pants hanging that low around my middle haha) And I had to dodge the piles of wet, slippery freshly-mown grass that covered the trail I run on 😦 But, I did manage a decent run, which I mapped manually. And I didn’t mind the silence, either.

Did you reach any specific goals this week? Do you have goals for this coming week?

I wanted to hit 5 miles and I had been pretty certain my run today was over 4, but I was wrong. I went on a really weird route, actually used the country roads in addition to the trail that runs through our wonderful NW Ohio farmland.

What did you listen to while you ran this week?

Wednesday was the same as it has been for weeks. Today was silence, and I actually found it peaceful.

Where did you run? New route, old route? Did you see anything special?

I started on the trail, then I took a detour to get a little extra mileage. But I kept on with the detour and went around the block (a small country block). It was refreshing to see something new!

What are your weather limits to running?
What’s too hot/cold?
Will you run in the snow or rain?

I’ve only been running when it’s been warm out. Coldest I’ve done was in the low-50s, but I’d do colder. Hot is where I get sticky. I skipped June pretty much because of our 100+ weather. But upper 70s is where I feel comfortable, maybe lower 80s if it’s a bit breezy or overcast. I haven’t had the chance to run in snow and, so far, no rain has caught up to me. But I think I’d keep running in rain–I doubt I’d go out and start when it’s already raining, though. We’ll have to see what the fall and winter bring for me (we have wet falls here lately).

Running Round-Up is a weekly meme I write about my running for the week. I post it on Tuesdays, but if you want to do it along with me, don’t feel the need to do Tuesdays–any day is okay, just link back to my post :) There are a series of questions I answer every week (feel free to omit a question if you don’t like it), but a different more interesting question at the end of each post.

Running Round-Up {8/21/2012}

What were your distances/times this week?

Thursday– 1.86 miles in 23 minutes
Saturday– 4.08 miles in 56 minutes
Monday– 1.01 miles in 11 minutes (I actually shaved off 2 seconds from my last “fast mile”, which I try to do at least once a week)

What motivated you to run this week?

I’m trying to get back to my longest distance, to date, which is 6 miles. I am hoping to get there by the end of August, which is attainable if I add a mile a week (as I hit 4 miles this week)

What did you think about while running this week? Did you have any random or profound thoughts?

I was actually thinking about how listening to an audiobook would do to my running, at least as far as time goes. I feel like it would hurt my time. I tend to drive slower when I listen to an audiobook, at least ones I’m interested in, because that gives me more time to listen. I’m not sure if that would change when I run. Plus, the faster-paced music helps me move and feel more energized, I feel–even if it is just the Beach Boys 🙂

Did you reach any specific goals this week? Do you have goals for this coming week?

I didn’t have any real goal this week. But I feel like I’m making good progress with my distance. I actually ran 4 miles with a 13 minute-mile average–I think the last time I ran 4 miles it was a 14-minute mile, so I’m good with that slight progress.

What did you listen to while you ran this week?

Same thing all month: Beach Boys, B-52s, Michael Jackson, and some 1990s throwback songs.

Where did you run? New route, old route? Did you see anything special?

Same old, same old. I always run on the trail. I won’t always do that, eventually I might run in town. But I feel a bit self-conscious. I know when people are on the trail they’re doing it for the exercise, so I don’t feel like they’d judge me. When I feel a bit more confident in my running, I won’t mind it so much when others see me.

Do you listen to music, audiobooks, etc. while you run?
Or do you prefer the peace of quiet?

As I was talking about earlier, I don’t listen to audiobooks, yet, and I’m reluctant to try it. But I listen to music that makes me happy, not exactly music to pump me up. But, when I hear “Dude Looks Like a Lady”, I get a smile on my face 🙂 I haven’t ever tried running without music. It makes it easier to hear my own breathing (or panting, really), which makes me feel slower. But maybe if I didn’t have anything to measure my time with at all, I’d go faster 😕

Running Round-Up {8/14/2012}

What were your distances/times this week?

Thursday2.51 2.90 miles in 40 minutes
Friday– 2.89 miles in 39 minutes
Sunday– 1.01 miles in 11 minutes
Tuesday– 3.81 miles in 53 minutes

What motivated you to run this week?

One of my best friends is getting married on September 1st and I bought a dress for it awhile ago when I was running regularly. So, in the short term, I’d like to look at least as good if not better as when I bought it.
Specifically while running, I was motivated to keep up with the man who passed me while running with a stroller and a sizable toddler within. Needless to say, I didn’t keep up with him, but I kept as close to him as I could.

What did you think about while running this week? Did you have any random or profound thoughts?

This week, I thought about, among other things, that I’m so glad the weather has turned around. If you can believe it, one reason I wasn’t very motivated to run at the beginning of the summer was because we were having days and nights of 90-110 degrees. But this week it was actually in the 70s!! So I’m so glad there’s more comfortable running weather.
Also, as usual, I thought about myself running alone. It’s always there, in the back of my mind–what if something happens to me while I’m out on the trail alone? The trail is pretty safe, very few incidents happen there, but I do enjoy running alone and doing that where there aren’t a bunch of people to see me worries me sometimes. However, my husband always knows when I go and I let him know when I’m done, so he doesn’t have to worry as much.

Did you reach any specific goals this week? Do you have goals for this coming week?

This is really my first week back at running after a month-long hiatus, so my goal has really been just to get back in the swing of things. But I was glad to make it back to my 3.8 mile route 🙂 I’m glad it hasn’t taken my legs too much getting used to running again. I’m still slow, but I am managing a reasonable distance for my personal running history.

What did you listen to while you ran this week?

I have a summer-y type mix on my phone. Or, at least what I consider summer-y. That means Beach Boys, B-52s, Michael Jackson, and some 1990s throwback songs.

Where did you run? New route, old route? Did you see anything special?

I ran the same route Thursday and Friday. I did that on purpose because the first day, my phone’s GPS didn’t work right, so I had to guess how long I went. Luckily, Friday it worked and I found I had underestimated how far I’d gone 🙂 Tuesday (today) I ran the route I used to help get me ready for the first (and only, so far) 5K I did. Sunday I just ran a straight mile as fast as I could. Believe it or not, 11 minutes is a good mile for me 🙂

WHAT IS YOUR RUNNING GEAR?

I have some basics. You know, a pair of tennis shoes that I try to wear only for athletic doings. A couple of sports bras–I got some new ones for running that are racerback and they are THE most comfortable pieces of clothing I have. A few shirts/tanks for exercising, because I actually don’t like running in big baggy t-shirts. And I do have a pair of shorts that I would never wear for anything else. Oh, and I have a armband for my smartphone so I can listen to my music and take my app to record my route while I run.

Running Roundup {8/7/2012}

I have decided to start my own weekly meme solely focusing on my newest hobby: running. So here goes. (Feel free to join in and create a post on your own blog if you’re interested.)

Here are some questions that I plan to answer every week.

What motivated you to run this week?
I haven’t ran in a month and I missed it. What with fixing up the house and the hot HOT weather, I was completely unmotivated to run. Now that big projects on the house are winding down and it is cooler ok the evening there are nor excuses.

What did you think about while running this week? Did you have any random or profound thoughts?
Mainly I thought about starting a running meme. I thought maybe I would run more if I was being held more accountable. I’m not addicted to running, but I really enjoy it. But there are those days when I try to find reasons not to go.

Did you reach any specific goals this week? Do you have goals for this coming week?
My goal was to make it a mile–I went 2.32 🙂 This next week I just plan on trying to get out there three or four times, nothing more specific.

What did you listen to while you ran this week?
(This doesn’t have to be a list of everything, but a few songs. If you read audiobooks while running, which one? If you don’t listen to anything, forget this question.

What brought a smile to my face while running was “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by the Beach Boys. That song used to make me cry because Nick and I started dating so young and it would have been nice if we were older, then we wouldn’t have to wait so long 😛

What were your distances/times this week?
(I won’t judge if you don’t get faster or go farther–my speed hardly ever increases, but my distance improves. We are all different types of runners.)

Since this week’s roundup is based of one day, this is easy. I ran 2.32 miles in 32 minutes.

Where did you run? New route, old route? Did you see anything special? (Insert photos if you take them. And you don’t have to be specific if your location is something you wish to keep private.)
There is a trail in my county that is 13 miles through farmland and woods. That’s where I run normally, so that’s where I was today.

Then I plan on a bigger, different question every week. Since this week is the beginning post, let’s go with beginnings.

WHEN/WHY/HOW DID YOU START RUNNING?

I started running because I could see the extra pounds melting off one of my best friends. Plus, I’m all for exercise that gets me outside. In general, I started to exercise to have a healthy heart. My family has heart issues, and I don’t want to encourage that, especially at age 24.
